The Best 1-Day Passadiços do Paiva Itinerary: Boardwalks, Wildlife & Europe’s Highest Suspension Bridge
If you’re looking for one of the most spectacular day hikes in Europe without flying to Patagonia, the Passadiços do Paiva in Arouca should be at the top of your list. Stretching 8 kilometres of wooden boardwalks above the gorges of the River Paiva, this Passadiços do Paiva itinerary takes you through old-growth forest, past grazing mountain goats, and ends — if you dare — on a suspension bridge 175 metres above the river. All of this sits inside the Arouca Geopark, a UNESCO-recognised territory in northern Portugal that most travellers have barely heard of. That’s still, for now, part of the appeal.
How to Get to Passadiços do Paiva
The trailhead is located in Arouca, at Estrada 326-1 — a rural municipality in the Aveiro district, roughly 70 km south of Porto. The most practical way to reach it is by car.
From Porto, the drive takes around 1 hour 15 minutes via the A32 motorway. Car rental in Porto runs €30–€55 per day in shoulder season (spring and autumn), rising to €60–€100 in peak summer. Splitting a rental between two or three people makes this very affordable.
There is no direct public transport to the trailhead itself. Flixbus connects Porto to Arouca town, with tickets typically around €5–€12, but you’ll still need a taxi or rideshare for the final stretch to the entrance — factor in an extra €10–€15 each way.
Direct flights to Porto land from London, Madrid, Paris, Berlin, and Amsterdam, among others, with return fares from around €40–€120 depending on the season. Shoulder season — April to June and September to October — offers the best combination of mild weather, lower prices, and thinner crowds on the trail.

Day 1 — Arouca: Boardwalks, Goats, and a Sky-High Bridge
Morning: The Passadiços Trail
Start early — ideally before 9 am. The Passadiços do Paiva trail is one of the most visited in Portugal, and the crowds build fast once the day heats up. Arriving at dawn also gives you the best chance of spotting wildlife: the trail corridor is known for mountain goats that graze along the rocky slopes, often completely unbothered by passing hikers. Keep an eye on the higher ridgelines, especially in the first few kilometres.
The boardwalk trail runs 8 km one way along the left bank of the River Paiva, descending through dense forest with the river cutting deep below. The wooden walkways hug the cliff face in places, suspended above cascades and rock pools. It is genuinely beautiful — the kind of landscape that makes you forget you’re somewhere in inland Portugal and not a national park in New Zealand.
The trail is not a loop — it runs point to point, ending at Janarde on the opposite end. Most hikers arrange a shuttle or taxi back to the starting point, so sort this in advance. The full walk takes around 3 to 4 hours at a comfortable pace, depending on how often you stop for photos (which will be often).
Practical note: The entrance fee to the Passadiços trail is just €2 per person, making it exceptional value. Tickets are available online at cmarouca.bymeoblueticket.pt — book ahead, especially for weekends and summer months when slots fill up.
Afternoon/Evening: 516 Arouca — Europe’s Longest Pedestrian Suspension Bridge
At the far end of the trail, near the finish point, sits 516 Arouca — a pedestrian suspension bridge that holds the record as the longest of its kind in the world, stretching 516 metres across the Paiva gorge and sitting 175 metres above the river below.
Walking across it is a proper adrenaline moment. The bridge sways with the wind, the valley drops away beneath the metal grating underfoot, and the views upstream and downstream are completely untouched. It feels like the landscape hasn’t decided yet whether it wants to be terrifying or beautiful — the answer, by the time you reach the far side, is both.
The bridge sits within the Arouca Geopark, a territory recognised by UNESCO for its geological heritage, including some of the largest trilobite fossils ever found. The whole area has a rawness to it that’s increasingly rare in European day-trip destinations.
Important: Crossing the 516 Arouca bridge requires a separate ticket, which costs around €12 per person. This is in addition to the Passadiços trail entrance. Tickets must be purchased in advance via the same booking platform: cmarouca.bymeoblueticket.pt. Slots are time-allocated, so plan your trail pace accordingly — the crossing is worth building your day around.

Average daily budget in Arouca:
- Transport to/from Porto: €30–€55 (car rental share) or €15–€25 (bus + taxi)
- Passadiços do Paiva entrance: €2 per person
- 516 Arouca bridge ticket: €12 per person
Total per person~€44–€69
Budget tip: Go mid-week in April or May. The trail is significantly quieter, car rental rates are lower, and the spring vegetation makes the gorge look extraordinary. You’ll also avoid the summer queues at the bridge crossing.
