Despite feeling remote, it is surprisingly accessible. The drive takes around two hours from both Lisboa and Porto, making it one of the best nature-focused day trips in Portugal.
Unlike the Algarve or the famous beaches near Lisbon, this area attracts travelers looking for hiking, freshwater swimming spots, and slower travel experiences away from crowded tourist destinations.
Why Visit Fragas de São Simão?
The biggest reason to visit is simple: nature.
The area combines scenic walking trails, dramatic rock formations, wooden pathways, river viewpoints, and natural swimming areas all in one place. It is also one of the easiest hiking experiences in Portugal for beginners, making it ideal for couples, families, and casual travelers who want outdoor experiences without difficult trekking.

There are usually two route options when driving to Fragas de São Simão:
- Faster highways with tolls

While avoiding toll roads is possible, most alternative routes pass through small inland villages where speed limits frequently drop to 50 km/h. The scenery is beautiful, but the drive becomes slower and more tiring.
For a day trip, the highway option is usually worth it unless you specifically want a slower countryside road trip experience.

How Much Does a Fragas de São Simão Day Trip Cost?
One of the best things about this trip is how affordable it can be, especially when traveling with friends.
For my visit, the approximate costs for two people were:
- Car rental: 65€
- Fuel: 30€
- Snacks and drinks: 20€
That brought the total to around 115€ for two people, approximately €60 per person.
Traveling with more people makes the trip even cheaper since fuel and rental costs can be shared. For groups of three or four, this becomes an extremely budget-friendly Portugal road trip.
